Higher Fidelity   -   Beyond the Real World

Home Theater is no stranger to the words: “High Fidelity”, but when I first saw Jeremy R. Kipnis and his Kipnis Studio Standard (KSS) Ultimate Home Theater, I will admit to having to entirely overthrow my own previous definitions as they apply to home (and even commercial) theaters. His KSS cinema room, I think, is (or should be) everyone's dream!

Film Gave Him The Wings Of A Dreamer

A few decades ago, his father - world-renowned harpsichordist and pianist, Igor Kipnis - asked a close friend (who was also a world famous architect and acoustician) to design and build him a very special room: a 210 square meter, double-story music studio and media library. He was clearly in need of such a room in order to house his large keyboard instrument collection, musical manuscripts, and enormous record & tape libraries, which he used in his daily profession as a performer, musicologist, and raconteur. After the completion of this grand music studio, Igor often played mini-recitals and hosted small benefit concerts in this room for invited friends and guests to join him and enjoy the wonderful classical melodies while also raising needed money for charity. It also soon became a great little home theater featuring an early Henry Kloss “NovaBeam” 3-Gun CRT projector with a 6.5 foot screen as it’s centerpiece. However, Igor could not have possibly imagined that within a few decades, his son, Jeremy would be equally attracted to the magic of this room, and recreate it as a complete statement demonstrating what home theater is really supposed to be all about!

Jeremy R. Kipnis, a passionate recording producer and engineer, film and video director, large format still photographer is even the creator of his own brand of award-winning classical music: Life-Like Concert Recordings are produced as audiophile high-resolution downloads as well as special limited edition Copper metalized CDs for his label, Epiphany Recordings Ltd.

Jeremy’s childhood was on the high side of music, but equally on the high side of photography, motion pictures, and television. He developed a special love for these mediums, and later professional ability in his youth that all started when his father and grandfather let him play and experiment with all kinds of their large-format cameras, movie projectors, and sound recording equipment.

"In fact, my love for music and film, as well as for audio and video, comes largely from my father's influence," Jeremy said as he put a cup of New York City’s finest coffee (Zabar’s) in my hands and started to lead me down into his audio-visual Universe. "When I was four years old, I remember my father taking me to the great movie palaces found in Boston, MA, Philadelphia, PA, Baltimore, MD, Washington, D.C., Danbury, CT, New York City, NY, and many other major cities throughout the world. Movie palaces during the Golden Age of Cinema (1926 – 1939) were distinguished by very well-defined and strong architectural contributions, Radio City Music Hall (NYC) and the Roxy Theater (Brooklyn) being two great historical examples, one simply cannot imagine the experience of attending a show in one of these venues until you have been there, in person, and sipped a strong drink at the bar between programs.”

Speaking of drinking, we walk by a plush looking bar containing every drink imaginable, and manned by no less than a voice activated Animatronic Darth Vader, acting as bartender. The bar is elegantly designed and located in the outer lobby of Jeremy’s plush KSS Ciné Beta: Trinity Design – one of a number of Ultimate Home Theater Screening Rooms he and his company, Kipnis Studios, are offering to upper-end clients seeking the very finest interior designs and the best A/V performance possible in a home (or even professional) theater. I nodded, and sipped my coffee; it was a little bit bitter. Jeremy, seeing my furrowed brow, immediately eyed the Papua New Guinea sugar in the Star Wars Lightsaber holder, and motioned for me to add some. Continuing, he says, “These historic theaters feature a huge performance area, as well as an interior design beyond imagination, with acoustics that are a dream come true. They can accommodate up to and beyond 6,000 audience members, and cater to both live as well as filmed performances; really, quite ambitious! Can you imagine a venue such as this with stages and screens as large as 45 meters (150 feet) wide? Naturally, as a little boy, I thought (on some level, at least) - I must have one of these as my very own movie theater and music room."

After so many years, Jeremy clearly remembers the quality of the classic old movies - "It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" (1963), "2001: A Space Odyssey"  (1968), "Star Wars" (1977), "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (1977), "Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1980), "Poltergeist" (1982), etc. And no wonder; each of these were being projected using 70 mm “Roadshow” prints, offering the very best, sharpest, most vivid and immersive wide-screen movie experience possible. Much change has occurred between then and now, with today's audiences having witnessed IMAX movies and reveled at their apparent miracle of gargantuan picture and bombastic sound.

Pure love of the medium did not let the young Jeremy necessarily become today's multi-award winning, world-class audio / video designer and technological player; No! When he was but a young man, Jeremy was lucky enough to have as his first teachers several titan master figures of the motion picture, photographic, sound, and music industries. "My grandfather and father were close personal friends with the co-inventor of the Kodak Kodachrome color film process, Leopold Godowsky II, and he taught me much about optics and chemistry as they apply to photography and filmmaking. My father was also a very good friend of noted photographer and creator of the “Zone System”, Ansel Adams, who encouraged me to become an award winning professional photographer as well as a successful 3D cinematographer."

Jeremy's continued with memories of his childhood. "My father’s career as an internationally renowned keyboardist brought me into contact with several incredible orchestral conductors of the 20th century: Leopold Stokowski, Carlos Kleiber, and Arthur Fiedler. Between rehearsals for various concerts or between the takes at a recording session, I had the opportunity to speak at length with each of these Maestros. Their passion for music as well as recordings were infectious, even more so because Stokowski shared his stories about the making if the monumental Walt Disney film, FANTASIA. Kleiber demonstrated for me (with a full orchestra) how musical phrasing, tempo, and orchestrated punctuation directly produce different types of emotional shading in music performances. And Fiedler gave me several impromptu conducting lessons with the Boston Pops orchestra, no less!”

Finally there is another dear old friend of his parents – A/V inventor and innovator Henry Kloss, whose contribution to the electronics world includes the invention of the “Acoustic Suspension” bookshelf loudspeaker (1954), as well as the creation of the first home and commercial video projection televisions (1972) working with Sony Corporation. Kloss was the winner of the United States’ famed Emmy Award and also indoctrination into the Audio Engineering Society’s Hall of Fame. Today, he would no doubt be designing speakers and video projectors using a computer while still maintaining the highest volume of sales vs. perceived musical quality. For many years, I visited him and saw how he worked, directly.

“In his laboratory, which just happened to be his garage, I observed how Henry used existing equipment and methodologies to open the doors of innovation. In the time I spent with him over many years, I gained first-hand knowledge of just how terrific standard and high-definition video images could be and how audiophile sound presentation could entirely change the way a person experiences music, movies, and television, dramatically. He provided me with a most precious wealth of knowledge and experiences to draw upon. In fact, together these five geniuses, who were present in my early life, provided me with the primary foundations for what has developed into the Kipnis Studio Standard (KSS) experience."

From the Theater to THE Theater!

His father’s nurturing and training would grow and accumulate into a wealth of professional knowledge and job experiences that ultimately led Jeremy to build his dream screening room. Drawing upon the knowledge and technical foundations he learned as a child, he would come to produce his own films, television programs, and audiophile music albums. "In the beginning of 2003, I began the construction of the very first KSS home theater system. In so doing, I transformed and (re)created my father’s studio to suite my exacting requirements as a Music Producer and Engineer, Film and Video Director, and 3D Cinema-Photographer." Jeremy smiled as he said this; apparently his father laid the "foundation" very satisfactorily! "My father's studio was specially designed to deal with the acoustic and weight demands of housing 8 keyboard instruments, including three harpsichords, two pianos, two clavichords, and a positive organ. The foundation is a ½ meter think, the floor made of solid Walnut with a surface area of 210 square meters, and a vertical space 6 meters tall. This space afforded me a great opportunity to replicate the size and scope of the famous Radio City Music Hall, and other theater venues I grew up attending. Donning my audio engineer hat, I researched and tested every variety of acoustic sound absorbing and diffusing technology in order to reshape the room to be acoustically ideal for my purposes – that of a mixing and mastering facility for 3D films and audiophile music albums for my label. I then complimented the whole arrangement with the installation of a sophisticated LED lighting system, capable of nearly infinite variation of color, hue, and intensity. Much experimentation went into the selection of these various components, as well as considerable testing in order to create this specific benchmark level of acoustic fidelity and visual transparency."

To get the perfect sound quality, Jeremy tailor-made a special 24-channel decoder, and created the establishment of a unique 8.8 channel surround sound system. "In the beginning, I originally specked and designed a 12.12 audio system, based on the size and volume of air in the room, but I found that it was simply too many speakers and individual drivers, confusing the sound rather than clarifying it. So in the end, I discovered that an 8.8 channel surround system was the perfect match for the room I was working on." The 8.8 channels are far superior to any traditional 5.1, 6.2, and 7.3 surround sound systems typically found in most movie theaters and many homes. The KSS 8.8 channel set-up is divided into the 6 vocal strata found in opera and classical music, from the bass to the treble, the range is expressed like this: bass, baritone, tenor, alto, soprano and coloratura. Each of these sections creates a full range channel array, one for each of the 8.8 channels, and a separate McIntosh Tube Monoblock amplifies each section of each channel array. In this way, the three-dimensional holographic qualities found in most every recording and film soundtrack are articulated to the greatest degree possible and with the least mechanical and electrical distortion.

4K Digital Film: Perhaps you remember in previous years such popular vocabulary as HD, 720P, 1080P   these represented the pinnacle of high-end video technology for years. However, with the continuous development in display technology and people demanding continuous improvement of video resolution, today the more popular term is "K". We often hear 1.3K, 2K, 4K. The combination of these figures and letters refer to the projection equipment’s on-screen resolution: 1.3K, referring to the 1280 pixel × 1080P pixel resolution; 2K or 2048 pixels × 1080P pixel resolution; 4K refers to 4096 pixels × 2160P pixel resolution, which is nearly 10 Megapixels. Look at the numbers: a 4K projector has a full resolution of more than four times that of a 2K projector; that’s four times the detail (using a sophisticated scaler like a Snell & Wilcox Interpolator to calculate seamlessly what is missing). The enhancement in picture quality is self-evident, but because of the high technical requirements, 4K projector products are only just now starting to become available in our East Asian cinemas. Of all projector manufacturers, Sony has taken the lead, first in developing various 1080P home electronics during the last 20 years, and more recently (over the last 5 years) has embarked on the professional cinema / large venue market by introducing the first 4K digital projectors with 3D capability. As the digital “film” technology continues to evolve, experts predict that in the near future, film will be completely replaced by digital information, that is, shown without the use of traditional physical media, the operation of filming will be faster, more reliable, and ultimately sharper, which will raise the bar, even higher. The resulting projection equipment upgrades will appear in the years to come, across the board - even at home. The emergence of this projector in the Kipnis Studio Standard (KSS) is powerful evidence of this trend. Having said that you may ask, what exactly is the difference in image quality between a 2K and a 4K projection system? As It turns out, there will be one installed in Beijing, shortly. Robb Report readers will get to see the capital's first private 4K home theater system, to be completed in December of this year. We will re-examine this format in detail in a future issue.

unlike anything you’ve ever imagined!

Can you just imagine, an 8.8 channel audio system capable of conveying the exact qualities of live music as it flows into the audience's hearts and minds? This is the very first KSS home theater audio system and it has as its total cost 2 million US Dollars, which includes 48 hand-made American McIntosh MC-2102 amplifiers (450 Watts each – with Jeremy’s choice of the best matched tubes) and 2 sets of the brand new MC-2301 amplifiers (currently on test, but about to replace the whole lot). The speakers are specially commissioned Snell THX Music & Cinema Reference (originally designed for George Lucas and Tom Holman for Lucasfilm / THX in 1998) with all hand-matched drivers and crossover elements, providing a ridiculously flat response of +/- 1/8 decibel across all 8.8 channels, total frequency range: 1 Hz – 102,500 Hz; dynamic range: better than 142 dB/SPL with less than 0.0001 % THD, Total Power Capability = > 65,000 Watts! “Simply Irresistible,” as the song lyrics go!

Sound is only half the experience, and in keeping with Jeremy’s desire to strive for perfection, and to refine the quality requirements apparently found only to this degree in his Kipnis Studio Standard (KSS) benchmark of industry standards, he tried hundreds of different imaging possibilities - from traditional 35 mm and 70 mm film up to 15/70 mm, as found in IMAX, and even 35/72 mm of Cinerama. The clearest answer for him was none of these, because none were really any different from the other. So Jeremy has tested almost every top-level projector from 1971 to the present, including the most recent professional and consumer models by Barco (Belgium), Christie (Canada) and NEC (Japan), which are all 2K DLP projectors (3- Chip Engines:  2048 pixels × 1080 pixels). But ultimately KSS was equipped with a Sony (Japan) SRX-T110 CineAlta 4K projector, whose SXRD technology Jeremy has been working on with Sony since 2003 "4K’s resolution of 4096 pixels × 2160 pixels  which is almost 10 Megapixels (or even higher, as can be found in the Meridian and JVC 4K projectors that I sometimes specify for certain installations) plus the degree of realism that it provides on-screen is well beyond that of conventional film (except in the laboratory); I really could not resist the temptation to jump on board the 4K bandwagon as early as possible. After careful consideration and audience testing, I specifically configured my home theater to make use of the top-end projection screen: A 5.48 meters wide × 3.05 meters tall American Stewart Snowmatte 1.0 Gain Laboratory Grade Motion Picture Screen featuring a 4-way motorized and automated masking system." This is certainly not all, but in order to fully demonstrate the power of the 4K (nearly 10 Megapixel) projectors, Jeremy has created an array of five specially equipped Apple 2.66 GHz MacBook Pros, along with a Sony LMT-300: 4K, 2K, 3D Media Block (a commercial digital media server). In addition, there are also three sets of Blu-ray players, two sets of high-definition HD-DVD players, a JVC HM-DH5U D-VHS High-definition video recorder (how quaint), even a Pioneer HLD-X0 High Definition 12” MUSE HD LaserDisc player (very rare). "In addition, I also designed an intelligent lighting system, which one can freely adjust so that the room, choice of color(s), and the lights intensity produce a specific mood." Jeremy has a love for different mood lighting and ambient effects. So, he designed and installed a complex computer-controlled eco-friendly LED system, with a total of 40 spotlights and 40 floodlights. At the touch of an Apple iPAD, anyone can accurately illuminate any part of the room; from the deepest corners of the projection booth to the enormous walls of LP Records, LaserDiscs, and Musical Manuscripts; illumination in any color and intensity of light imaginable. Projecting a rainbow is only one of its possibilities, but so is plain white light – it can be done immediately and effortlessly thanks to Jeremy’s design.

"What good would all this technology be without something to watch? Not only are there movies available here in my KSS Cinema, but equally as much television, and of every variety and channel ever created. I love to get comfortable and watch the great series available on HBO and Showtime in stunning High Definition series like “Dexter”, “Weeds”, and “The Pacific”, shows that are made with the cutting edge in picture and sound production technology with an eye and ear toward superior quality!” Jeremy walked around to a small video editing station located behind the main leather sofa seating area. "I often take a break from editing and choose a favorite piece of music and select a lighting program I have created that suites the mood.” In fact, no matter what the music, mood, or your personal taste, there is a lighting program to suit the situation, thanks to Jeremy’s thoughtful and intuitive iPAD / iPhone / iPod Touch KSS Remote Control App. “You will be able hear and feel all kinds of amazing sounds you never heard before from your favorite pieces of music, film, or television – and it will seem to be flowing all around you. The lighting automatically compliments and adjusts to the mood. You will become so involved with the presentation that you will be tempted to reach out into the space in front of and around you, but you cannot touch anything. Instead, you feel it, just as it would be in reality at a live concert.” Here, Jeremy closed his eyes and gently shook his head to the music he had selected for us to listen to (John Williams and the Boston Pops: Summon The Hero). "Of course, this is a great place for audio and video entertainment; do you like video games as well?” Jeremy’s system also includes a PC, Mac, PS3, and XBOX 360 all support high-definition picture and sound. Many games are also now becoming available in 3D. I can only tell you that the experience of playing them in the KSS Cinema is more challenging and more breathtaking than anything I’ve every experienced, anywhere else in the world! – It will challenge your abilities, no matter who you are.

To Establish the Real World through Critical Presentation Standards!

With his KSS Ciné Beta home theater design, which he has dubbed TRINITY, because of the trifecta between picture, sound, and tactility, Jeremy finally is satisfied with the quality of the presentation. "If you are sitting in my current prototype theater, you will see, hear, and feel the same immediacy, depth, and impact as you will in reality - that is, in real life - it’s visceral! Nevertheless, I still feel that there is room for improvements. My plan is to offer these unique technical and artistic designs in smaller home theater configurations that, without a doubt, will set the standard in performance, worldwide. My attitude is: these are top-level configurations regardless of what size or cost, and the value in adding together all the little improvements that I design into a home theater creates a physiological effect in the audience - a unique and wonderful experience – which provides the equivalent of a First Person Perspective (FPP), that is . . . of being there, LIVE!" But what person would not seriously wonder if this description can actually be true – that one can be so totally enraptured by his presentation standards as well as his home theater designs to the degree he speaks of? So, in demonstration, we enjoyed a few movie clips summoned forth instantaneously on his iPad touch screen controller. Jeremy smiled, patted me on the back, and motioned me to sit down on the plush leather sofa --- in the middle, "Where your body, mind and spirit will feel it!" 

The first thing he put on for me were scenes of natural landscapes: a Sony created Hi-Definition piece, that he had recorded from INHD - a free High Definition Satellite & Cable channel, some 6 years ago on one of his three HD DVRs! The strikingly sharp, brilliant daylight-bright images featured sprawling pastures of green grass, rippling rivers, and in the distance - a huge mountain peak with a castle and small animals on a hillside - coupled with the wisp from time to time of the wind's effect on the trees, the water, and the sounds of small animals running about - simply astonishing! He really took me to the theater of nature; so realistic (in fact) you can almost touch the moist soil and smell the fragrance of the grass. As the cinematography gradually narrows the gap between a deer and the enormity of the background it stands upon, I feel the flutter of the breeze past my head, generated from strategically calculated bass transducers, which Jeremy says will produce a 9 knot wind, the sort of thing you would expect to feel outside - in the real world . . . where these images seem to be streaming from, LIVE. The surprising effect of all this visual, sonic, and temporal resolution is that only a few moments of this is enough to convince you (down to your soul) that what is being experienced in the TRINITY Theater is the genuine article - the real deal - with visual accuracy and sonic impact to compress your eyes and chest cavity when a sudden clap of thunder, appears! As I listen, I hear the extremely delicate flutter of drops on both the trees and the field of grass; I involuntarily begin to anticipate rain, falling from the sky, and I cannot help but raise my hand over my face in order to block it! 

"Haha", I laugh out load! "Look at the public going to an IMAX theater, thinking they are having the truest experience of seeing a movie. Hahaha!" Jeremy seems to have long expected that I would have this exact reaction, "You sit in one of my home theater rooms, and the result is beyond what anyone could possibly expect or anticipate. With such an enormous sized screen and a set of audio and video specifications that is beyond anything you could imagine . . . your body and mind are so rapt up in the presentation that you will feel like an active participant, which, as it turns out, is a wonderfully amazing feeling.” It seems that I really underestimated the amount of research, development, and integration necessary in order to create what can only be compared to . . . a mirage! The shear capability of his home theater design begs for any movie, TV show, and I suspect video game to be watched, heard and experienced like never, ever before. I must ask, "What else can you show me? Certainly, you must have other even more astonishing ‘experiences’ than just the most beautiful scenery in all the world?" Jeremy simply hands me his KSS - iPad Controller Interface!

With a few keystrokes of the smooth, well-lit surface of his iPad, I come to see and select a recent concert featuring the New York Philharmonic performing in Pyongyang, North Korea - a live HD concert video originating from a Blu-Ray disc, whose data has been stored in a specially configured Kaleidoscape HD Media Server. The immediacy of the “KSS Experience” brought me from moments in an empty concert hall, where I could sense palpably that I was the only one in the room, to that moment where the ring of applause dances around me, and (again) makes me feel like I'm there - in the audience. Maazel's baton and shining, dazzlingly faint smile are as clear as if I were there; a strong tone of concentration comes across his face as he completes a piece ...... and I am intoxicated! During these moments, I feel as though I am experiencing the same quality of vision and hearing as I would have had in that location, at that moment in time. I cannot begin to contemplate the degree of knowledge and engineering skill required to accomplish such a feat, but this is truly as close to experiencing either a time machine or the Star Trek HoloDeck as anything I ever expect to in my lifetime.

Usually, even the best home theaters and dedicated listening facilities (used for mixing and mastering commercial media) cannot completely resolve the picture and sound so that one can concentrate on any part, separate and independent of any other part. There is normally always a loss of detail or inability to follow and differentiate an individual instrument within a section or a singer in a chorus - the details becoming fused together and indecipherable. But in the case of Jeremy’s KSS “Trinity” Theater, the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto makes me feel a sudden upsurge of emotion when the strings all come in together. I see all the bows moving in unison, with musical precision that creates a sublime, wonderful sound, and all the while I can occasionally hear the audience gently cough, or move in their seat. Everything is naturally present and properly proportioned, located holographically around us; it is so natural and authentically reproduced that I cannot believe the room we are in contains only two people: myself and Jeremy.

Finally, I pick "Superman Returns" in the IMAX Version - shown with a specially devised pivoting dual-lens system, which affords a 4K 2D presentation alternating with the 3D portions of the film. The movie originates from a special Sony LMT-300 digital media server (normally found only in commercial movie theaters to show first run films). Now, I have seen the IMAX version of this film in public cinemas several times. But when I put on my 3D glasses during those segments of the film, it gave me the shock of my life when I tried to reach out and touch a mobile phone that was floating in midair, TWICE! The KSS Cinema Design produced such believable 3D that I simply forgot that I was wearing 3D glasses – thanks in part to the beautifully light and well engineered design by REALD. Superman was definitely in flight! With the surrounding landscape changing around him and the whirr of the plane's engines around us, I suddenly feel … I am Superman; flying freely and about to save that plane from disaster! After viewing this little excerpt in the "Best Seat of the House" in "The Best Home and Professional Movie Theater in the World” (a simple fact!), the only thing that could possibly be any better would be if all the actors suddenly came down off the screen and moved all around us. In the end, I have no doubt that Jeremy will conquer that dimension, very shortly, as well.

 

Conclusions

All of the events that I experienced this most enjoyable afternoon can culminate in only one true accurate assessment: that Jeremy is a genius, a man of great expressive power, with nearly limitless technical skills: "powers that go beyond those of mortal men!" His pioneering use of the 4K projector puts the power of every detail in a film “face first” - right there in front of you. I find that I am completely captivated by almost every frame, in fact each frame can now be seen to exceed the degree of clarity normally associated with the 15/70mm “edutational” IMAX snoozers, found at all the science museums. I even find myself counting the number of hairs that are mussed-up on Superman's head after a fight scene, and looking for my favorite buildings in the New York City Skyline, which serves as the backdrop of Metropolis.

If only we had had more time – there were simply too many great choices available in his media library of fantastic films, terrific television and nearly countless CDs, LPs, LaserDiscs, and Reel-to-Reel Tapes. "Time is limited, I’m afraid. I really wish we had an opportunity for you to experience everything!" Jeremy felt that these excerpts were far from showing the total power and capability of his KSS home theater designs, "I have imported and catalogued all of my multimedia library of original sources, millions of tracks available at your finger tips via the iPhone or iPad. All media information is instantly available, but we must still take the time to listen, view and savor it in real time." The media collection is valued about 1.5 million U.S. dollars and has taken decades to acquire. But Jeremy knows the world of media and performances like most of us know our own faces in the mirror. He is providing the rooms, choice of media, and the Kipnis Studio Standard (KSS) quality of experience to a select few who truly value their viewing and listening time. His first client was the noted American music producer and rapper, Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, who liked the KSS Experience --- so much so, that he outfitted his entire high-rise apartment with Jeremy’s A/V designs. So, now I have to re-measure what Kipnis originally invested in the research and construction of his 6 million U.S. dollar home theater design. It now appears the theater is an absolutely excellent value for money.
